FAIRBANKS — Today Savannah Fletcher filed to run for the Alaska State Senate District R, following the news that incumbent Click Bishop will not be seeking re-election. Savannah Fletcher is the current Presiding Officer of the Fairbanks North Star Borough Assembly, a civil rights attorney, and a mother, wife, and sled-dog owner.
“I am proud to announce my run for Senate,” said Ms. Fletcher. “Senator Bishop has served our District with a steady hand for years and I am eager to continue his advocacy for energy affordability, a strong education system, and a strong economy that supports working families in the Interior.
“I have had the honor of representing all of the Tribes within our District in my role as an attorney, by advocating for families navigating the child protection system. I will bring that family-first perspective to my work in the Senate.”
Ms. Fletcher has also spent years working on a co-production team addressing issues facing the Arctic such as wildland fire, subsistence and diminishing fish yields, and energy security. This experience leaves her well-equipped to bring solutions to the State Legislature.
Ms. Fletcher had been running to serve as the next Mayor of the Fairbanks North Star Borough. “I will no longer be running to serve as Mayor of the Fairbanks North Star Borough,” said Ms. Fletcher. “I am proud of my work for the Borough and will bring my knowledge of local government and municipal issues into my work at the State level. I will serve in the Senate with the same passion and hard work that I have brought to my Borough service.”
